Discover the Art of Wine Tasting with the 5 S’s

Your guide to experiencing Bottled Poetry the Corks + Melanin way

At Corks + Melanin, we believe wine is more than a drink; it’s a full sensory experience, a conversation, a celebration of culture in a glass. Whether you’re new to the world of bottled poetry or a seasoned sipper, mastering the 5 S’s will transform every pour into something meaningful. Let’s walk through it together.

See

The story starts before the first sip.

Hold your glass up to the light and take a good look.  The color, clarity, and depth of a wine tell you so much about what’s waiting for you.  A deep ruby red whispers boldness. A pale golden white promises something crisp and delicate.  A blush rosé? That’s pure celebration in a glass.
At our tastings, we encourage you to really look because just like us, every bottle has layers worth appreciating.

Swirl

Let it breathe. Let it shine.

Give your glass a gentle swirl. This isn’t just for show; swirling opens the wine up, releasing its aromas and allowing it to express itself fully. Watch the wine coat the sides of the glass and slowly drip back down. Those drips, called “legs,” can hint at the wine’s body and alcohol content.
Consider it the wine’s moment to get comfortable in the room, and we know our community knows how to make an entrance.

Smell

Your nose knows more than you think.

Before you take a sip, bring the glass close and inhale slowly.  What do you detect? Berries, citrus, oak, florals, earth, spice? The aroma of a wine, its “nose”, makes up the majority of what we actually taste. This is where bottled poetry starts to speak its first lines.
Don’t be shy about it.  Close your eyes if you need to. At Corks + Melanin, there’s no wrong answer, only your honest, personal experience.

Sip

Now that’s the moment.

Take a small sip and let the wine settle across your entire palate.  Don’t rush it.  Roll it around gently and notice how the flavors evolve: what hits first, what lingers, how the wine feels.  Is it light and silky? Full and velvety? Dry or sweet? Tangy or smooth?
Whether you come to us dry or sweet, light or full-bodied, this is your moment to connect with the pour.  No expertise required.   Just presence.
Body: Feel the Weight of It
Body is simply how the wine feels in your mouth, its weight, its texture, its presence.  Think of it like music.  A light-bodied wine is like neo soul playing softly in the background, smooth and effortless on the palate.  A medium-bodied wine is like R&B at the perfect volume, balanced, warm, and just enough to make you move. A full-bodied wine is like a live gospel choir filling the room, bold, commanding, and impossible to ignore.  Pay attention to how long the wine sits on your tongue and how much it coats your mouth.  The longer and heavier that feeling lingers, the fuller the body.  And just like people, every body type brings something beautiful to the table.

Savor

This is what it’s all about.

After you swallow, pause.  The finish, how long the flavor lingers on your palate, is one of the greatest markers of a quality wine.  A long, complex finish means the poetry isn’t done being read yet.
But savoring at Corks + Melanin goes beyond the glass.  It’s about savoring the conversation across the table, the music in the background, the community around you, and the pride of lifting melanated-owned labels.  Every bottle is a story. Every sip, a shared memory.
